Olympic Cauldron

There has been lots of talk around the visibility of the Olympic Cauldron after the Great One lit it up beside the Convention Centre last Friday after the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

Personally I think that there is a need for it to be protected. So why hasn’t it ever been a hot topic at previous Olympic games? It’s because BC Place is the first time an opening ceremonies has taken place indoors. Before, they’ve probably designed for the cauldron to sit safely on top of the stadium where it is visible from everywhere, and this is the first time it’s sitting right on ground level (I think). Imagine all the things that could take place if they didn’t control how close you could get to it! I could already see it – protesters might throw rocks at it, some others might graffiti on it, and there are others that just like to climb.

Still, I think they should’ve redesigned the perimeter to be some kind of low-obstruction. The construction fence is way too ugly, and the improvements to leave a 10cm gap in the fence is kind of laughable… considering I could barely fit my camera through that gap, and it’s built for giants.

Anyways, 7 days into the games, and Canada’s sitting 4th on the medals table, with 4 Gold, 3 Silver, 1 Bronze!

onion: Lucky you! I’ve been there about 4 times now, every time it’s different. First time it was much farther back, second time it was moved up, third time the 10cm gap, and the fourth was still with fence on top but plexiglass bottom!

aw: I was there yesterday noon-ish and the fence was still there on the top. Hopefully it’s gone now by today?
