2010 Celebration of Light – Mexico
Thursday, July 29th, 2010 :: 11:50 pm
Mexico lights up English Bay on the third fireworks night with the theme “Journey”. They were the 2006 fireworks competition winner, and it’s been 4 years since they are back. After Spain put on an incredible show on Saturday, Mexico needed something spectacular to beat them.
Unfortunately, to my disappointment, I thought the show wasn’t great at all (although in the newspaper it said that it had good reviews…). There were too many pauses, and some sections lacked colour and style. What’s worse, there were some parts where the fireworks were not synced together, having three shells explode first, then subsequently having another two explode (which made the fireworks looked a bit lopsided). My “artistic techniques” didn’t really quite work out the way I wanted to this time, but hey, that’s why it’s an experiment right? :-)

2010 Celebration of Light – Spain
Sunday, July 25th, 2010 :: 4:33 pm
I remembered the last time Team Spain was in Vancouver, three years ago, they had a pretty solid performance. This year with them winning the World Cup, I wondered what they would do to “celebrate” their victory (or even add to that)!
Yesterday’s shows was themed “Hell & Heaven”, and it included quite a few familiar music. After the show, my thought was “I haven’t seen anything quite like it at English Bay.” Their fireworks were choreographed in sync with their up and down music beautifully, and the way they used the majority of the sky, was pretty rare. I remember being wow’ed and getting the goosebumps a couple of times during the performance, especially towards the end when they used so many colours without overdoing it. There’s a pretty good YouTube video showing the last few minutes. I hope Mexico has something up their sleeves next Wednesday!
And I realized that there’s nothing quite like the experience than in English Bay – despite the growing crowd every year!
